The Fireball, a KMG creation, is probably one of the most widely seen major attractions at large fairs today. The Fireball is pretty much a more intense version of the Huss Frisbee. The Fireball has four large supports to hold up a hub at the top, from the hub hangs a large arm that holds a claw-like wheel. The claw has 6 spokes with sets of 4 seats attached to the ends of each spoke; riders are seated in an inverted seat with their legs hanging down. They are secured in with a bulky harness that is barely padded at all; luckily riders don’t get jostled around much!
The Ride
After everyone is secured, the loading platform lowers and the arm holding the claw begins to swing like on a swinging ship ride. The claw then begins to rotate as the arm swings. The rotation of the claw isn’t very fast but the swings on this monster well make up for that. Whenever the ride op feels fit to do so, the arm will suddenly gain a quick burst of speed (as felt by riders) and the arm will swing to well over 90 degrees. Riders are basically half upsidedown during these high swings and the G forces when the swing reaches its bottom most limit is absolutely brutal. When the swing reaches its apex, riders get a long amount of hangtime before slamming down onto the seat again. It’s definitely the perfect ride for people who like some heavy duty G forces.
Other Info
This ride is named Fireball in the United States only, in Europe it is called Afterburner; why, I have no idea. KMG also has a more compact version of the Fireball called Freak Out which has 4 sets of seats as opposed to 6. However smaller isn’t necessarily worse, the Freak Out packs quite the punch and swings pretty damned high as well! Many other companies decided to knockoff the Fireball as well such as Zamperla with their Discovery and Nitro rides; Fabbri with their Space Jam ride; Technical Park also has a knockoff called Street Fighter (does that violate copyrights?); and finally Chance has the Revolution. The only things that vary with these models are the number of seats and height, other than that they’re practically the same.
